YAMAHA TAKES OVERALL #1 ON FIRST QUARTER 2008 SALES FIGURESBy, Trevor Hedge - 8/Apr/2008Hot on the heels of a record 2007 that saw ATV sales grow by nearly ten percent the ATV sector has surpassed all expectations by extending that growth figure to an amazing 15.2 percent during the first quarter of 2008.The first quarter also saw the changing of the guard at the top of the table with Yamaha beating Honda out of #1 spot on the charts with 1325 sales credited to the tuning fork brand. Honda certainly didn't go backwards however with their sales up by 7.1 percent over the same period last year but that was not enough to best Yamaha’s 18.1 percent growth for the quarter.Suzuki only managed a slender 1.8% increase and is in significant danger of losing their third place on the charts to Polaris. The North American brand registered 20 percent growth and was only 27 units shy of surpassing Suzuki’s first quarter total. Kawasaki also registered a good 15.4 percent boost in sales. The star performer was Can-Am. The Canadians scored an amazing 85 percent increase but still have quite a long way to go before they can challenge Kawasaki for fifth place overall. Can-Am are the rising star of the sector. That 85 percent increase comes hot on the heels of the amazing 92 percent improvement they registered in 2007 compared to 2006. The top selling ATV model during the first quarter of 2008 was Honda’s TRX250 but Honda’s entry level farm quad is in danger of losing its position at the top of the charts thanks to a huge boost in Sportsman 500 sales that put the Polaris only ten units adrift of the TRX250's tally of 217. Honda took out third, fourth, fifth and sixth on the charts however with the TRX500FM (193), TRX400F (176), TRX420FM (173) and TRX420TM (169). Yamaha then rounded out the top ten with the YFM350A (168) in seventh, YFM250 (145) eighth, YFM400FA (122) and YFM700FAP (122). Brand Rankings 1. Yamaha (1325) 2. Honda (1233) 3. Suzuki (621) 4.
