ATV SALES GOING GANGBUSTERSBy, Trevor Hedge - 29/Jan/2008ATV sales grew by nearly ten percent in 2007 with Honda’s number one position in the category coming under increasing threat from Yamaha thanks to their impressive range of sports machines. The big sellers on four wheels continue to be the farm machinery with Honda’s TRX350TM (1032 sales) and TRX250 (1026 sales) leading the way. Also making the podium was Suzuki’s LT50 (742 sales) junior machine ahead of the Polaris Sportsman (664 sales). Yamaha’s YFM350FA (659 sales) was the tuning fork brands top selling agricultural ATV. Honda filled positions six and seven with the TRX500FM (637 sales) and TRX400F (621 sales). Polaris made another top ten appearance with the Hawkeye (591) while Yamaha rounded out the top ten with the YFM350A (569 sales) and YFM250 (564 sales). The biggest improver in the agricultural sector was Polaris. Sales of the Sportsman 500 were up 78.5 percent and the Hawkeye up 120 percent from 2006. On the fun part of the equation, Western Australia’s booming economy brought its recreational ATV market share to a figure almost too incredible to believe. Of the 2421 recreational/sports ATV machines sold in Australia last year 1337 of them found a home in WA. That equates to a stunning 55 percent of the national recreational/sports ATV market. Topping the recreational/sports sector with an incredibly strong quartet of models was Yamaha. YFM700R Raptor sales grew by 11 percent with 493 hitting the trails in 2007. The next best performer was the YFZ450 (292 sales) despite a 16 percent drop from 2006. The YFZ350 Banshee (190 sales) stepped onto the podium but also experienced a 17 percent decline in sales. The YFM350R Raptor went backwards to the tune of 19 percent but still managed to tie up fourth place with Suzuki’s LTR450, the pair scoring 154 sales apiece. Yamaha’s YFS200 (149) finished sixth while Honda took positions seven, eight and nine with the TRX400EX (140 sales), TRX450R (113 sales) and TRX250EX (95 sales). Rounding out the top ten was Suzuki’s LT-Z400 with 90 sales amounting to a 42 percent decline for the model compared to 2006. Yamaha took an incredible 57 percent of the Australian sports ATV market with Honda (14 percent) and Suzuki (10 percent) rounding out the sports sales podium. Polaris took a strong nine percent share to lead Kawasaki (5 percent) and Can-Am (4 percent). The scales tip the other way however when agricultural sales are added to the tally and Honda comes out on top overall with 5724 sales, giving Big Red a 29 percent share of the 19752 unit Australian market. Yamaha were not far behind with 5570 sales to their credit. Suzuki shared the overall podium thanks to a 14 percent increase over 2006 pushing their sales to 3404. Polaris were next best with 2752 sales giving them a strong fourth position ahead of Can-Am who with 708 sales recorded a highly impressive 92 percent improvement from 2006. On the dealer side of the score WA also made its presence felt with the top telling Kawasaki dealer in the nation (Mack 1), Yamaha dealer (Five Star), Can-Am (Seadoo Sports and Leisure), and Polaris (Polaris Central) dealers all situated on the sandy side of the country. The top selling Honda dealer in the nation is Rising Sun (Townsville, QLD) ahead of The Honda Shop (WA) while the top selling Suzuki dealer in the nation was Tony Armstrong’s Springwood Suzuki in Brisbane (QLD) ahead of Savage Suzuki (WA). |
