YAMAHA #1 but SALES DOWN FOR BOTH YAMAHA AND HONDABy, Trevor Hedge - 12/Jan/2009After a record 2007 that saw ATV sales grow by nearly ten percent ATV sales relaxed somewhat late in 2008 due to the economic crisis. Honda and Yamaha were both down on sales compared to 2007 figures but Suzuki, Polaris and BRP all recorded strong growth. The first quarter of 2008 saw the changing of the guard at the top of the table with Yamaha beating Honda out of #1 spot on the charts and despite a slowing in sales during the latter half of 2008 Yamaha managed to hold on to the overall top spot on the rankings on whole year figures despite their tally being 2.4% down on 2007.Honda sales were down 10% while Suzuki ended the year well with a 7% improvement to strengthen their narrow third place margin over North American brand Polaris who recorded an excellent 15.8% growth figure. Kawasaki were 8.8% down on 2007 figures and in danger of being overtaken by star performer Can-Am who with 1023 sales grew by 44.5% in 2008. KTM entered the ATV market in 2008 and sold 96 of their new sports machines but the Austrian firm is set to get more serious in 2009 and is sure to start making more of an impact in the sports sector. Agricultural sales continue to dominate the figures with the farm sector buying up 14,410 sales compared to 5580 recreational sales. With agricultural sales making up 73% of the ATV market it is easy to why the top ten model list is domination by utility machines. Honda's TRX250 maintained the strong lead it established early in the year to come out as top model in 2008 despite a 10.6% decline in sales compared to 2008. Polaris made huge inroads with their aggressively priced Sportsman 500 model to take second place ahead of another triumvirate of Hondas. The TRX420TM, TRX420FM and TRX500FM were third, fourth and fifth on the charts ahead of the Polaris Hawkeye. Yamaha only had two models in the overall top ten which underlines the residual strength underpinned by their extensive recreational line-up.
