YEWERS DOES THE DOUBLE - PRO AND VETS #1 FOR 2007By, Phil Smith - 20/Nov/2007Anthony Yewers, the 40 year old strawberry farmer from Perth secured his first Pro Quad title at Newry, Victoria over the weekend. “At my age, man I’ll take a win whenever I can get it. But I’m sure Ryan (Lancaster) and Chris (Brenton) will be fighting for these for a long time yet,” he said after the event. Three points separated the top three competitors in one of the most hotly contested Nationals to date.136 Quads descended from all points of the compass to the tiny hamlet of Newry in central Gippsland, Victoria for the Yamaha 2007 ATV Motocross Nationals. Riders from as far afield as WA and NT were added to the mix of eastern states regulars, all coming to the immaculately prepared hard pack track for the two day carnival.Yewers (#22 Honda) was the quiet achiever all weekend, consistently carding the points over the five twenty minute motos. The point score of 25 points for the win, 22 points for second and 20 for third really means there was little chance for riders to be able to overcome a DNF. Unlike the 25 for first, 20 for second and 16 for third scored in road racing events. Yewers certainly was a sucker for punishment, his hands were testament to the gruelling workload he set himself by not only the blue riband Pro category but also
the 35-44 Veterans class which set him a punishing
schedule of ten motos. Yewers may be big, but there is
little doubt that he is also fit. He took victory in all
five Vet races and his consistent podiums in the Pro
class were enough to earn him the double titles.Ryan Lancaster (#44 Yamaha) and Chris Brenton (#55 Honda), odds on favourites to secure the crown, were dealt a tragic blow in the opening stanza, both failing to finish the opening round. The WA duo’s title aspirations in tatters due to Lancaster cooking a motor in the hot dry conditions, revealing later that he’d jetted the bike too lean. Brenton's demise was the result of a broken axle, the first time the 2006 Champ has ever broken one and it has to happen in the Nationals! Tom Price (WA) local Lancaster was second to Yewers despite clearly having the fastest bike on track all weekend. His gritty performance all the more surprising considering he’ll be under the surgeon’s knife this week for a total shoulder reconstruction. He gave himself every chance to snare a maiden Aussie crown, forging through to end the day with four wins from five starts but fell a tantalizing two points adrift. The 20 year old explained, “It was not to be. We needed the luck to fall our way and that’s racing. Ant deserves everything, he’s probably been in this sport for probably as long as I’ve been alive and he’s earned it. “ Joshua Ross (#77 Honda) was a new convert to quads using all his local two wheel knowledge to round out the top three only a single point behind Lancaster. That’s a whole lot harder than on two wheels,” Ross quipped. “We only got the bike on Monday. It’s Rodney Scales’ race bike and he loaned it to me for the event and it’s awesome. I’m only used to borrowing my sisters stocker so this is a hell of a lot quicker.” Honda factory Pro Brenton hounded Lancaster throughout the motos but had to contend with fourth. Brenton rolled his Honda in the fourth moto and combined with that DNF in the first it was just too high a mountain to climb back from there. Brenton struggled valiantly in the last moto while battling from a hand injury sustained in the earlier roll over. The final comment should go to Yewers, when asked why he keeps punishing himself in not one, but two classes, "I like doing plenty of riding because it helps you scope the track and that, but by the end of the day you’re feeling it though. I just like competing. This was hard because even though I won it I don’t feel like I was the best rider. "There are a lot of good riders in WA. I’ve been riding against Ryan and Chris week in week out and those guys are just tough. "Quad racing is growing really fast and WA seems to be leading. All the motocross clubs embrace us so we can now race at most of the tracks. There are a lot of juniors coming through and everyone at the clubs put in so there’s a lot of competition.” Head on over to our forum to air your views on the nationals or check out some of our image galleries from the 2007 ATV Nationals.
