SMITH QUICKEST TO FINKE8/Jun/2008 - By, Randall KillnerUnder grey skies the business end of the Tattersall's Finke Desert Race began this morning. Competitors who had endured extremely greasy track conditions during Saturdays prologue would face much better conditions today on the race from Alice Springs to Finke.Overnight the rain that had caused havoc on Saturday had ceased leaving plenty of water lying on the track.But the buggies and 4WD's that were on the course earlier in the morning had displaced many of the bigger puddles, providing a slightly heavy track for the bikes and ATV's. The upside of this was a lack of dust, allowing close racing to take place. 2007 Finke Desert Race winner, Paul Smith #999 led the field away from the start line at Alice Springs, after blitzing Saturdays prologue in a time of 6min: 6.74s. NSW's Rick Beer #998 was second away in the class closely followed by Alice Springs local Ed Hardgrave #903. Paul Smith never looked back, maintaining his lead over the 221km's of red sandhills and whoops to be the first quad to greet the chequered flag in Finke. His time of 2 hours 46 min 41.20 seconds on the Can-Am DS450 was 22 seconds clear of Sean Donnelly #988 (2:47:03.10) in second place. #995 Luke Beechley was third over the massive table top jump at Finke in a time of 2:49:56.80, with John Maragozidis #944 and Rick Beer #998 rounding out the top five. The moto section of the Tattersalls Finke Desert Race is set to resume at 11.30am on Monday for the return run from Finke back to Alice. With the sun peeping through the clouds this afternoon, the track is expected to dry out even further, allowing competitors to charge to the finish line.
