SMITH TAKES BACK TO BACK FINKE WINS - PROVISIONAL9/Jun/2008 - By, Randall KillnerPaul Smith has backed up his 2007 Tattersall's Finke Desert Race win, claiming another crown in this years tough eventSmiths win was far from straight forward. A rear shock reservoir came off, handing the lead to the Polaris of #995 Luke Beechey early on the race back from Alice Springs to Finke.However with the quad repaired at a check point, Smith hunted Beechey down and regained the lead. "I was really stoked with the Can-Am machine, I had 20km/h more top end road speed and that's what got me over the line." Commented an elated Smith. "We were pulling 140km/h or more on the road sections between Rodinga and Deep Well, allowing me to get back past the Polaris." From here he charged to the finish line and took the chequered flag under the huge Tattersall's Finke Desert Race banner. "I'm glad I came home in first place. I can't believe it, two in a row!" Beechey's return run wasn't without drama either. Running out of fuel 25km out, after not filling his tank completely at the fuel stop. "Luckily some guys from a camp had some in a jerry can and we were able to get to the finish." said Beechey. "After Smith passed me back, I thought if I could stay there I would be pretty happy. This is the first time I have raced Finke and I have finished second. "The bike was nice and strong and the track was rough and choppy, but the Polaris held up well." Taking the final podium position in the quad class was Rick Beer #998 on a Can-Am 450. "It was a fantastic run back, a little bit dusty but good. The track could have done with another two inches of rain." said Beer at the finish line. "The Bike didn't miss a beat, best thing since sliced bread." |
