LANCASTER WINS DAY ONE AT NATIONALS - ALL WA PODIUM25/Oct/2008 - By, Trevor HedgePort Hedland dynamo Ryan Lancaster (Yamaha) has dominated the opening day of competition at the 2008 Australian Quad Championship which are being held at the north-west coastal town of Smithton in Tasmania.2006 Champion Christopher Brenton (Honda) held Lancaster out for the first half of the second moto before Lancaster hit the lead and streaked away. Lancaster and Brenton both held small advantages on each other through certain sections of the circuit but on a main straight consisting of whoops Lancaster's speed was simply astonishing. The powerfully built Lancaster just lifted his machine off the first ramp, clipping the top of each whoop on the power and floated across with so much speed that onlookers were rendered jaw agape dumbstruck every single lap.Honda man Chris Brenton crossed the line 10.71 seconds behind arch Yamaha nemesis Lancaster in the first bout and 16.47 seconds behind in the second bout. Suzuki man Chad McKay rounded out the race one podium to make it an all WA top three in the opening moto after battling his way forward from sixth. McKay was not far behind the leading duo for much of the second bout before finally crossing the line 34 seconds behind race winner Lancaster, and 18 seconds behind Brenton. Jy Stokes took fourth place in both of day one's races. Taylor Milling fifth ahead of fresh graduate to the Senior ranks Luke Gaisford in sixth. Aaron Ovens had some problems in both races and struggled to 13th in lap one but consoled the Polaris squad somewhat with a fifth in the second moto. East coast favourite Luke Beechey struggled to tenth place in the opening moto with chain problems and more problems in the second moto relegating Beechey three laps down. 2007 National Champion Anthony Yewers was racing with a thumb cut clear down to the bone after an incident earlier in the day. He stalled his machine in the opening moto which then flooded when trying to restart it, the kill switch had been accidentally activated. He took no points from the opening moto but enjoyed a huge battle with Paul Smith over sixth place in the second moto. The likeable pair slapping each other on the back afterwards, a clearly pained Yewers exclaiming that 'you don't have to be winning to have fun, that was unreal'. Strange sense of humour these farmer types... Victorian young gun Mitchell Van Vliet took seventh in the opening moto ahead of local star Alan Linger. Van Vliet took ninth in the second moto behind Linger. It is fair to say that competitors at Smithton have been shell-shocked by the speed of the WA onslaught. An all WA podium in each of the opening bouts with no other rider finishing within the same minute as the Lancaster, Brenton and McKay triumvirate a clear demonstration of sandgroper domination. Many had expected the east coast riders to be more competitive this year after a busy 2008 season of eastern seaboard competition the likes of which has never been seen before, but again they seem to have come up short. The final of the scheduled three Pro races for day one was cancelled due to excessive dust. A decision some of the leading WA riders were far from impressed with as they fear overnight rain could turn the track into a mudbath, thus rendering their superior outright dry speed less effective and allowing the competition to close up somewhat. No doubt some riders will be doing some serious rain dancing tonight in hope of that prediction coming to fruition. If today's racing is anything to go by they will need to be, as if conditions are at all similar to today it's clear they have no answer for the three WA youngsters.
