KTM mounted Stokes scores upset victory in race three26/Oct/2008 - By, Trevor HedgeHeavy watering of the 1.6km Smithton circuit this morning turned the track into a completely different sort of animal for race three of the 2008 Pro ATV Quad Motocross Championships.The changed conditions caused some upset results.KTM rider Jy Stokes scored the holeshot and cleared off into the distance while all those left behind struggled for vision while being caked in mud. Riders visibly struggled to see where were they going at times, as such passing was immensely difficult. 2006 Champ Chris Brenton got caught up in the starting gates and by the time he finally got unhooked was more than half a lap down on the whole field. The youngster battled bravely through to ninth place as with a clear track in front of him he quickly chased down the pack but from then on going was difficult due to those aforementioned visibility problems that made passing extremely difficult. Brenton scored the second fastest lap of the race with a 1m40.64 on lap three but race winner Stokes was the only man to sneak under the 1m40s barrier on his way to victory. Can-Am rider Mick Roycroft did a brilliant job of keeping the pack behind him in the difficult conditions to claim second place overall despite his fastest single lap being amongst the slowest out of the entire top ten. Chad McKay rounded out the podium on his Suzuki only 0.8 of a second behind Roycroft and 1.3 seconds over day one dominator Ryan Lancaster. Mitchell Van Vliet brought home a solid fifth place ahead of Aaron Ovens, 2007 Champ Anthony Yewers, Troy Sheridan, Chris Brenton and Taylor Milling rounded out the top ten. Luke Beechey finished 11th and after running strongly early on Luke Gaisford faded to 12th place late in the race ahead of Alan Linger. Andrew Jackson and Paul Smith failed to finish. There are two races remaining today to decide who will be crowned the 2008 Pro ATV Champ.
