Brenton, Lancaster & McKay score podiums in penultimate bout26/Oct/2008 - By, Trevor HedgeVictorian youngster Mitchell Van Vliet scored the holeshot in the penultimate Pro race of the 2008 ATV Quad Nationals at Smithton in Tasmania.Van Vliet looked quite solid in the lead until a couple of laps in when his Yamaha spluttered to a stop on the main straight. There to pounce on his misfortune was Christopher Brenton.Brenton took the lead and despite being closely hounded for the first half of the race by fellow Western Australians Chad McKay and Ryan Lancaster was never headed. As the race moved well into the second half of the race Brenton managed to break away a little as the battle for second place between McKay and Lancaster heated up. Lancaster eventually got the better of McKay who faded in the closing stages to a distant third place, 21.9 seconds behind race winner Brenton and 15 seconds behind Lancaster. 2007 Champ Anthony Yewers had plenty of competition to fend off in the early stages before bringing home a solid fourth place. Luke Gaisford looked to be in with a good chance of making it an all WA top five. The young Can-Am pilot had a long tussle over fifth with Polaris rider Luke Beechey. Only a couple of turns before the chequered flag Gaisford went down and lost nearly half a minute which relegated him to eighth place. Sixth place went to Aaron Ovens ahead of Taylor Milling. Race three winner Jy Stokes finished a lap down in ninth while Alan Linger rounded out the top ten. Mick Roycroft brought home 12th place while Paul Smith limped across the line with a badly spluttering Can-Am. With one race remaining by our calculations Lancaster currently leads the event with 90 points to Brenton's 81 and McKay on 80.
