SUPPORT CLASS REPORT FROM TRI-STATE RND TWO IN MOUNT GAMBIER27/May/2008 - By, Trudy Van Vliet and Trevor HedgeAaron Ovens and Luke Beechey took out a 1-2 victory for Polaris in the premier Pro category at Mount Gambier but the minor classes also had their fair share of rough and tumble. The Women's class had a nine strong grid with some new riders coming out of the woodwork. Ashe Kawasaki Team rider Jeanette Lindsay put in a huge effort over the entire day on what was a standard production machine. Dirt Angels rider Patrisha Bartley had her work cut out for her after snapping an axle in practice and South Australian rider Donna Newman proved a force to be reckoned with.In the opening moto Newman spun out on the notorious first corner that seemed to be catching everyone out. The mistake relegated her back to last however she then made up huge ground to put herself right back into contention and bounced back to a podium result. Jeanette Lindsay the winner despite the best efforts of Patrisha Bartley Lindsay again triumphed in the second moto but start-line trouble made things a little harder for her in the final bout. At the start line Lindsay was left wondering why she couldn't change gears only to realise that she had left the park brake on! Once up and running she quickly worked her way into the lead and checked out. Lindsay stated,
"I love the track. The Kawasaki is good
off the start and I will be very happy once it is wired.
It will be heaps faster and a lot safer to landThe Veterans class is proving to be the support category to watch with the biggest fields of the series providing plenty of thrills and spills. NSW rider Peter Middleton also had a few moments and mechanical problems but survived the rough and tumble better than anyone to claim the overall round victory. A win, a sixth and a second place earning him 61 points for the day. Can Am rider Rick Beer was a little too eager, jumping the start and leaving himself high and dry hooked up on the gates. The Tasmanian bounced back with a second place and a win to take second overall ahead of third placed Anthony Parsons. Team Can-Am rider Darrell Knight was a sight to behold on the big Renegade 800. Due to class restrictions on capacity his Renegade has been reduced in capacity to meet the 730cc class limit. The huge four wheel drive machine dwarfed its South Australian pilot but Knight proved man enough for the task and a convincing victory in the second moto helped him claim fifth overall behind Ian Haggie. Hustler ATV race team rider Daniel Penraat (SA) had a fantastic start to the day only to get tangled up in the first corner in both of the remaining motos. The Clubman class is growing well with ten riders fronting the grid at Mount Gambier Newcomer to the racing scene Justin Smith (VIC) was given his initiation rites. At the first corner Smith was pushed and shoved by more experienced competitors in what turned out to be a baptism of fire. Smith however returned fire by improving throughout the day. The highlight of which was a fantastic second place in the final bout behind round winner Brad Hutchins. Newcomers Nathan Watson and Alistair Watson rounded out the overall Clubman podium with Nathan the only man to take a win from Hutchins in South Australia. Not to be outdone is the very entertaining Jumbo Juniors Class. These oversized men on their tiny quads put on a great performance for all spectators. Victorian father of Four Brothers Racing Rob Van Vliet once again proved a comedy act. After being pushed off the track by a fellow rider, Van Vliet took to the skies over a berm ,somersaulting in the air only to jump up back on his feet to the roar of the crowd. Having to race his oldest son, 16 year old Mitch, Rob has his work cut out for him. Mitch romped to three victories while Phil Ede and Rob shared the minor rungs on the rostrum. The last round of the Outlaw Tri State Series is in August at Toolleen, Central Victoria.
