SMITH TAKES OUT OUTRIM ROUND OF VIC CHAMPS23/Jul/2008Victorian ATV MX swung back into action last weekend at the newly revamped Outrim circuit in Gippsland. The QRCV held it’s fourth round of the hotly contested State 8 series at the loamy track, a favourite for many of the competitors. Quads have been competing at Outrim for many years and without fail the heavens have opened and turned it to a slop fest. 2008 did not buck that trend.Can-Am’s Paul Smith lined up full of confidence as this was his first hit out since winning the Finke Desert Race last month. In race one young guns Mitchell Van Vliet and Cam wade led the more experienced Pro’s in the slop but it didn’t take long for Smith’s DS450 make his way past in the slippery conditions to take the lead. With a clear view Smith was able to check out and take the win over Anthony Dellios by around eight seconds. Cam Wade third. Race Two was just as muddy as race one but a dry line was starting to clear on the track but with the slop disappearing the dry line was as slippery as ice. Van Vliet pulled the holeshot of the year. As Smith and Wade looked to battle it out in the first turn Van Vliet came from nowhere and split the pair like they were standing still. Smith tailed Van Vliet for over half the race before he could find an opportunity to make a safe pass and chose his moment on the up ramp of the large table top. From there Smith was able to pull enough of a gap to hold on until the chequers followed by Van Vliet and Dellios. In the last Pro race of the day it was Aaron Ovens who grabbed the lead early with Smith hot on his heels. Ovens had struggled with the wet conditions but now with the track drying up he was back on song. Ovens and Smith set a cracking pace leaving the rest of the field in their wake. There was nothing between the two rivals with Ovens not putting a foot wrong for the entire 15 minute moto with Smith almost latched on to his grab bar, the Polaris man held on for the win ahead of Smith. The duo nearly half a lap in front of the rest of the field. The Overall for the day was Paul Smith 1st, Aaron Ovens 2nd and Anthony Dellios taking 3rd Smith said after removing half a ton of mud, “I’m stoked to take the win in these conditions, anything can happen when it’s like this. I took a gamble today and it paid off. After watching practice I pulled my Kenda Parker DT’s out of the trailer which were my Finke tires and ran them hoping the higher ground clearance would keep me out of the slop, it worked and I think it gave me a big advantage earlier in the day. Also we have got our Fox Shox working a treat now and as the track chopped out the DS450 just started to excel. We have the last round of the Tri State series in two weeks but our main focus is on the Australasian Safari and getting ready for that adventure”. |
