WA PRO ATV ROUND 2 - BRENTON ON TOP AGAIN12/May/2008 - By, Trevor HedgeThe AJS Motorcycle Club’s Wanneroo Park circuit held the WA season opener on one of the most chopped out tracks competitors had ever seen. Despite a fanatical grooming a week prior to the second round of the six round series at Bunbury conditions were just as rough or perhaps even rougher by the time 265 competitors had wreaked havoc on the sandy Shrubland Park circuit.Ryan Lancaster took first blood at Bunbury by four seconds over Chris Brenton who had started poorly and had to work his way past David Sanders, pint sized dynamo Chad McKay and man mountain Anthony Yewers to claim that second position. McKay had started strongly but was caught out in the whoops and lost a number of positions as a result. Yewers crossed the line for the final podium position 20 seconds behind Brenton.Brenton dominated the second moto. His fastest lap an amazing three seconds quicker than any of his pursuers and the ex Kalgoorlie kid took victory by 23 seconds. Ant Yewers made it a Honda Shop 1-2. Factory supported Yamaha pilot Ryan Lancaster rounded out the podium ahead of David Sanders and Chad McKay who had been losing pace as the race progressed due to a flat rear tyre. Things were much tighter in the final moto with Lancaster scoring the holeshot while Brenton had to fight his way past Yewers and McKay to move up to second place. Clutch problems then made Lancaster's job a lot harder and eventually he succumbed to the charging Brenton. If not for that mechanical hiccup it may have gone the other way as Lancaster did put in the fastest lap in the final moto. Brenton's machine did not escape unscathed either with the left Nerf bar ripped clean off his TRX450R. Brenton was unaware it was even missing until it came time to clean the machine up for the trip home and was unsure if it came adrift in an altercation with another rider or was simply a victim of the rutted out Bunbury track. Chad McKay was the third man home in the final moto and that important 20 point haul moved him up to fifth in the championship ahead of Colin Jefferies who by his standards had a shocker at Bunbury. David Sanders took 52 points for the round which doubled his championship tally but Yewers' 60 point haul moved him past the Esperance man to claim third in the series standings. Brenton still reigns at the top of the table with 142 points but Lancaster is only 11 points adrift. Luke Gaisford wrapped up all three Intermediate bouts onboard the Rockingham Powersports Can-Am DS450 ahead of Kyle Lawrence and Paul Hughes. The WA State Pro ATV Titles are staged over a six round series. With two rounds down there are now four to go. Contestants head south again for Round Three at Jindong Park in Busselton on June 15. Wanneroo Park hosts the ATV only fourth round before the ATV Pros again join the two-wheelers for the penultimate round at Noble Falls on August 24. The finale will be held at Coastal Park just south of Fremantle on September 27. Standalone events on the WA calendar include the Coastal Cup of May 24, the rich King of the Cross event on August 3 and Golden Wheel Classic on September 28.
